Moving a mobile home between North Carolina and South Carolina

A home that crosses the state line needs both states' paperwork: North Carolina's transport and tax-paid moving permits on one side, South Carolina's county moving permit and SCDOT permit on the other, plus each state's escort rules and the age limits at the destination. This page walks the whole move, with a page for every rule.

Two states, two sets of rules

What each side of the line requires.

North Carolina

  • An NCDOT oversize/overweight transport permit (MH-2) before the wheels roll, short hauls included.
  • The county's tax-paid moving permit before the home leaves its county.
  • Mountain routes often need NCDOT route approval before the permit is issued.
  • Homes built before June 15, 1976 are refused for placement in most NC counties.

South Carolina

  • A county moving permit proving the taxes are paid (SC Code 31-17-360).
  • An SCDOT oversize permit for every trip on a state road.
  • Certified escorts once the load passes roughly 12 feet wide.
  • No HUD label (built before June 15, 1976) means the home can't be set up in SC.

Before anyone quotes a price

Three checks that decide whether the move happens.

The data plate

Built before June 15, 1976? Then the home predates the HUD code. What that means for a move.

The destination's age window

Counties and parks on both sides often cap incoming homes at 10 to 20 years. Can this home be moved?

Permits in both states

Transport permits, tax-paid permits and escorts, filed before move day. Mobile home moving permits in NC and SC.

The haul

Each page carries the price picture and what changes the number on a long route. Going past the Carolinas? Moving a mobile home across state lines covers Georgia and Tennessee too.

Questions we get on cross-state moves

NC and SC moves, answered.

Do I need permits from both states to move a mobile home from NC to SC?

Yes. Before the home leaves North Carolina it needs an NCDOT oversize transport permit and the county's tax-paid moving permit. In South Carolina it needs an SCDOT oversize permit for every trip on a state road and the county moving permit that proves the taxes are paid (SC Code 31-17-360). We file them and list each one on the quote.

How old can a mobile home be to move between North Carolina and South Carolina?

Neither state sets one statewide age cutoff for the move itself. The practical line is June 15, 1976, the date the HUD code took effect: older homes lack the federal label, and South Carolina will not let them be set up. Above that line, the destination county or park often adds its own window, commonly 10 to 20 years in North Carolina and 15 to 20 years in South Carolina.

When does a mobile home need escorts in South Carolina?

Certified escorts are required once the load passes roughly 12 feet wide, and the permit sets the travel windows. A double-wide travels as two sections, so plan on escorts for each.

Can a pre-1976 mobile home be moved to South Carolina?

Not to be lived in. A home built before June 15, 1976 has no HUD certification label and cannot be legally set up in South Carolina. We check the data plate before we price, and quote removal instead when the home can't go.

What about moves into Georgia or Tennessee?

Each state the home physically travels through runs its own oversize permit program, so a move that crosses more than one line needs a permit in every one of them. The destination county still approves the setup.
